Explain fractions to a Grade 5 learner using a simple everyday example.

1. The idea

  • A fraction shows a part of something whole that has been shared into equal pieces.
  • The bottom number (denominator) tells how many equal pieces the whole is cut into.
  • The top number (numerator) tells how many of those pieces we are talking about.

2. Everyday example

Mum cooks one chapati and cuts it into 4 equal pieces. You eat 1 piece, so you ate 1/4 of the chapati. Your brother eats 2 pieces — that is 2/4, which is the same as half (1/2).
